Hi Mary, Look what you have learned this weekend, how to do a blog, how to do a power point and gmail. Maybe this won't be so bad. Yes, my dog does look like the picture only he is no longer a puppy, but has the same coloring. Thanks for visiting my blog. Mary
My thoughts and feelings on the Iraq War. First and foremost I totally support the men and women who are in our military and trying to do their assigned job in Iraq or any place else. They chose a military profession for their own reasons and are trying to do their job to the best of their ability, given the resources that our government provides. Our governing leaders and policy makers are the decision makers on the direction our military takes. The direction they have taken is a long, dangerous, and costly one. We need to persuade the decision makers to change that direction towards peace. The killing and maiming needs to stop of our people and of the Iraqis.
Next topic: New Technology - I am interested in having and using a document camera in my classroom. Several other teachers in the building have one. I am still using an old overhead projector. Even though I am in the Career and TECH Ed. department, I am always the last to get anything. Just a few weeks ago they replaced my 7 year old computer.
I liked your comments. Yes, I appreciate our service men and women. I think most people do. Yet, our GI's are stuck in a bad situation which I feel so bad for them. Hearing the stories of their situations is truly sad.
Reflections on one day in the classroom: I had heard on the radio on the way to work about a storm coming and how it affects kids and how the full moon affects people too. I think there is some truth in that. The kids seemed more squirrely than usual. The loudness of their voices seemed to bother me more today. When I am stressed I know I don't like a lot of noise. The kids were not bad or mean just hyper and happy. They love to give each other hugs. Not sure about what that means. Boys to boys and girls to boys, it doesn't seem to be anything more that friendship. Does this go on in other high schools? If this was going on years ago kids would be calling the boys gay and saying the girls were loose. But now they just seem to like the physical touch of a hug and it doesn't carry any negative meaning. Which is nice that they are open and friendly. I wonder if all this hugging will have an effect down the road.
It's interesting watching fads come and go. Maybe the hugging thing is just that? I do see this behavior as well at the hs, but not so much at the ms. I'm sure there are students who are starving for some non-threatening hugs as they may not be getting that physical love at home. Maybe the hugging is a form of validation for some as well. Yes, I am a person of worth, thanks for for letting me know. Sometimes actions are easier than words. Debbie
Hobbies I would like to have time for are: training my dog for better behavior and for agility competitions, quilting, exotic travel, wine tasting and learning to fly. What I have time for is a little sewing, a little gardening, a little needlework to relax and walking my dog. I can't wait till next August when this program will be complete, I am thinking of a cruise to Alaska, not real exotic but a start. Maybe I will do a side trip of going on a float plane or watching grizzly bears catch salmon. See you all soon Mary
Hello, I have been to Alaska at least seven times. It is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and I would recommend it as a vacation spot for anybody. The wildlife is amazing and the price for a vacation there is very affordable.
Vacation Reflection: One of my best vacations was to Disneyworld with my daughter when she was 12, she is now 21. We went during spring break for a week in late March. We were still in winter here but it was warm and sunny in Florida. Flowers were blooming, etc. We went to all 5 parks and 2 water parks during the week. In the evening we would go back to the hotel and swim and sit by the pool. There was a band playing every night, Caribbean type music. Everyone who worked there was friendly and nice. It was clean and we felt safe. We enjoyed the animal park and Epcot the most. I thought the parade at Epcot was so colorful and lively. Disney puts a lot of detail in everything they put together. It was fun, relaxing, we got along great. She was the perfect age for that trip, not a difficult teen, but then she never was.
Worse Job! I have been luckly with most of the jobs I have held. The one that comes to mind is working in a movie theater, 34 years ago, so it was one huge theater. I worked the snack bar and ushered. I had to stand just inside the curtain and watch the audience to be sure no one smoked. Of course you ended up watching the movie and if the boss came in and caught you, big trouble. After my shift I smelled like popcorn and hot dogs and grease, disgusting.
I can't see you working in a movie theater! I guess you have to do what you have to do. I have to ask...did you ever get caught watching a movie? Funny how times have changed. You had to watch for smoking...now it's the cell phones that are irritating in the theaters. Deb
I can just see Mary sitting in the front row of the theater with her feet up on the chair in front of her, smoking a ciggerette(sp), and talking on her cell phone when her boss walked in.
Reflection on Student Impact Over 28 years of teaching I hope I have impacted a lot of students in a positive way. Students have said or come back to visit and made comments that led me to believe that I have made a difference in their lives. One young man comes to mind, he was my aide and did the jobs I asked him to, with some level of difficulty. But he was nice and always pleasant. Suddenly he drops out of school and I ask around what happended. He had been caught selling pot to an undercover policeman and transferred to another school to get away from the so called friends who put him up to it. I wrote him a letter, telling him of my belief in him and of my disappointment, etc. I ran in to him shortly after that and he gave me the biggest bear hug, and thanks. Mary

Sounds like a very nice memory and a very nice daughter. I hope to see a Disney park some day.
